"Theater In The Rough"

Beware. If you haven't yet seen this nearly mythical band of street performers in your daily travels, you may be in danger of losing your "New Yorker" card.

The Red Bone Guerillas, or RBGs, are the ragtag group of insurrectionist street performers who have been spraypainting those vaguely revolutionary "star+backwards+R" icons all over lower manhattan sidewalks. They have acquired, and relatively quickly, street-performance credentials approaching that of the Naked Cowboy; and perhaps even beyond the A-train acrobats. You’ve seen the man dancing Salsa with the life-sized stuffed puppet, dipping her sensually and flipping her long hair and short, swinging skirt in flamboyant flourish? Well, that’s not enough. The RBGs are well on their way to NYC sidewalk icon status, and you don’t want to be left behind.

Setting themselves apart from most street theatrics, the RBGs have seldom been spotted w/an open hat or guitar case, or even an empty mask on the ground to solicit donations. Enigmatic about their origins and intentions, their theater seems to insert itself into daily life for no purpose. Unless pure entertainment, food for thought, or an exciting moment during your lunch hour is purpose enough for you.

It is, for me.

Catch them if you can.
