This film represents a lot of firsts for me. I was 18 years old and in my first year of film school at Pratt Institute. This was my first completed piece, my first piece without dialogue, the first time I entered my work in a contest, and the first time I ever won anything. (I was also the first student to enter with a first-year project, and the first black student to ever win this scholarship.)

Shooting this project showed me the importance of storyboarding. Since I didn't know yet how to use a camera, I relied heavily on drawings to communicate with my cameraman, and was able to get exactly the footage I needed. Editing the project taught me about the marriage between moving images and music… and I also learned about the dififculties in directing & starring in a piece, an act I have yet to repeat.
